Amgen is investing $600 million in a new science and innovation centre at its headquarters in Thousand Oaks, California. This facility will incorporate advanced automation and digital capabilities, aiming to enhance the company’s research and development (R&D) infrastructure. Construction is set to begin later this month, and the project is expected to create hundreds of jobs in the United States.

The new centre will house a cross-disciplinary team of researchers, engineers, and scientists. According to Robert Bradway, Amgen’s Chairman and CEO, the facility will provide a collaborative environment equipped with the necessary tools to advance scientific discovery and improve human health. This investment aligns with the US Government’s push for greater domestic investment by the pharmaceutical industry, which includes measures like encouraging active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing and the FDA supporting new manufacturing sites.

Amgen has invested over $5 billion in direct capital expenditures in the US since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017. The recent extension of the TCJA by President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act further facilitates Amgen’s ability to invest domestically. In addition to the new centre, Amgen recently completed a $900 million expansion of its Central Ohio biomanufacturing facility, which was developed in under 26 months. The company has also allocated $1 billion for a second manufacturing plant in Holly Springs, North Carolina.

This strategic investment not only strengthens Amgen’s R&D capabilities but also supports the broader goal of enhancing US-based pharmaceutical manufacturing.
